Dear CACG member,
In last week’s Common Good Forum, our own Professor Stephen Schneck wrote about the recent document from the Holy See’s Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace regarding the world financial crisis. As Schneck wrote, this new text flows squarely from the long tradition of Catholic Social Teaching. So we have been aghast to see so many conservative U.S. Catholics attacking the document and its call for a more just economy.
We are asking you to take a few minutes to send an email or a letter to Cardinal Turkson, the President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, thanking him for the document and urging him to discuss with the U.S. bishops who begin their “ad limina” visits to Rome next week for meetings with the Holy Father and the Vatican Curia.
We encourage everyone to write in their own words, but to make these points:
1) We are appalled/aghast/shocked that so many have attacked the document and Cardinal Turkson and the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, most without even bothering to engage the issues that document raised, and that these attacks were so disrespectful/dismissive/rude towards the Council and Cardinal Turkson;
2) We are grateful/in solidarity with/fully support the document and its call for a more just economy;
3) We hope/urge the Cardinal to discuss this important document with the U.S. bishops during their upcoming ad limina visits to Rome.
Letters or emails to Cardinal Turkson do not need to be long. They can be as long or as short as you like. Please feel free to express any other thoughts that occur to you, to cite something you read about the document, etc. You may, or may not, choose to identify yourself as a member of CACG. The important thing is to show solidarity with the Cardinal who has certainly restated the Church’s commitment to the Common Good for which our organization stands.

Thanks in advance for taking a moment to stand up for the Common Good.
Sincerely,
