"Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock." (Matthew 7:24)
The Latin phrase "semper paratus" (always ready) is the well-known motto of the United States Coast Guard.
It also is a great motto for a Christian this Advent season as we prepare for the coming of Christ into our midst.
In today's Gospel, Jesus says that those who listen and act on the Word of God will be set on a firm foundation.
And how ought we act on God's word? Quickly and decisively. This is how Jesus's earliest companions responded to his coming into the world. Mary "made haste" to Elizabeth to tell her the good news. The shepherds made haste to visit the newborn. And the holy family made haste into Egypt after hearing of Herod's plans.
Ask yourself: what is God speaking to me today? And how can I respond both quickly and decisively to the Lord's prompting?
