During an election year when Catholics are being aggressively courted by both political parties as key swing voters, national Catholic social justice organizations are launching a new campaign – Faith Can Move Mountains: Vote the Common Good-- that will empower Catholics to put the common good before narrow partisan agendas.

USCCB Position on Global Climate Change

In their statement, Global Climate Change: A Plea for Dialogue, Prudence and the Common Good, the U.S. Catholic Bishops declared: We especially want to focus on the needs of the poor, the weak, and the vulnerable in a debate often dominated by more powerful interests. Inaction and inadequate or misguided responses to climate change will likely place even greater burdens on already desperately poor peoples. Action to mitigate global climate change must be built upon a foundation of social and economic justice that does not put the poor at greater risk or place disproportionate and unfair burdens on developing nations.

Sisters of Mercy React to Recent Immigration Raids

In response to a recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid in Pottsville, Iowa where 390 of approximately 2,300 residents were arrested and detained. Sister of Mercy Kathy Thill spoke at a press conference demanding that the dignity of all people be respected and their rights protected.

She said, "The immigration policies and practices of our government are disastrous. The inhumane way these raids are conducted and the negative impact on families and our communities is intolerable. The trauma created is a tremendous injustice. It is time to change our immigration policies and practices so that once again we become the nation in which the dignity of all people is paramount and their rights protected."
