Dear brothers, sisters, and friends in the LGBT community,

Pope Francis has said that the Church should apologize for its mistreatment of the LGBT community. We agree. That's why during this Jubilee Year of Mercy, we take the time to apologize for our individual and collective sins as a faith community. We know we have contributed at times to the violence and the exclusion that so many in the LGBT community face. With the Psalmist, cry out, "forgive us, Lord, for we have sinned!"

We know when we encounter LGBT persons, we encounter Jesus himself. We thank you for your lives, your gifts, and your contributions you have brought to our communities. We pledge to work with Pope Francis and our faith family across the globe to ensure that the Catholic Church is what Pope Francis longs for it to be: "a place of mercy and hope, where everyone is welcomed, loved and forgiven."
