Tell Rush Limbaugh: We support Pope Francis!

We are disturbed by Rush Limbaugh's incendiary comments last Wednesday, November 27th about Pope Francis and are joining together with Catholics and other allies throughout the nation to support the Holy Father. To call Francis a proponent of "pure marxism" is both mean spirited and naive. Pope Francis's critique of unrestrained capitalism is in line with the Church's social teaching. His particular criticism of "trickle down economics" strengthens what Church authorities have said for decades: any economic system which deprives the poor of their dignity has no place within a just society.

Contrary to what Mr. Limbaugh suggests, the Catholic Church isn't built on money, but on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ.

We call on Mr. Limbaugh to apologize and retract his remarks. We urge other Church organizations and leaders--both ordained and lay--to also condemn Mr. Limbaugh's comments.

We proudly stand with Pope Francis as he provides prophetic leadership for the Catholic Church and the entire world.

Rush Limbaugh is certainly going to Hell when he dies. I feel sorry for him. Jesus has abandoned him and his soul lives now with the Devil.

The Pope was trying to remind others of its biblical principles – capitalism without getting lost in materialism … allowing the Lord to judge sin rather than being judged by individuals – pretty simple teachings that should not be twisted by others – whether they agree with the bible or not!

I am fed up with greedy liars polluting the beauty and justice of the Gospel. Jesus was many things, a mysterious man who had many lessons to teach. But he was certainly an advocate for the poor, sick, powerless and downtrodden. Indeed, his main lesson was that it is our obligation to help the unfortunate. It takes a liar or an ignoramus to view him otherwise because his teachings about justice for all – especially the poor – are all over the Bible.

It is time for religious people from the left of the political spectrum to wake up and be heard. The Church has a long history of advocating for social justice, so we are squarely within Catholic tradition. In fact, we are obligated to do so. Anything less means we are not fulfilling our calling to follow Christ. Let us not let power, money, and outright lies distort what Jesus said. This is an old story, happening many times throughout history, where religion is abused and misused to PROTECT the powerful. This is an unforgivable abomination.

I can never understand why people who have millions and billions will fight tooth and nail to protect a few dollars that would mean so much more to the indigent. The bitter irony is that these people are using scripture – justice filled, egalitarian scripture (!) – to oppress the powerless. I would respect them more if they simply said it’s my $, and I don’t give a damn who starves and who eats. That would be honest. But we have an OBLIGATION to correct them when they sully and misuse Holy Scripture.
