Catholics in Alliance Supports Michigan Healthcare Reform Initiative

Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good (CACG) is one of the endorsers of a ballot initiative designed to reform the health care system in Michigan. The initiative asks voters to approve a constitutional amendment that would require the state legislature to cover the state’s 1.5 million uninsured residents and make health care plans more affordable and efficient.

On Jan. 8, press conferences were held around the state to kick-off the campaign to raise the thousands of signatures needed to get the measure on the November 2008 ballot. Vicky Kovari, National Field Director for CACG, spoke at two of the press conferences along with other community, healthcare and medical, union, and faith-based leaders about why this initiative is needed.

The initiative reads:

“The State Legislature shall pass laws to make sure that every Michigan resident has affordable and comprehensive health care coverage through a fair and cost effective financing system. The legislature is required to pass a plan that, through public or private measures, controls health care costs and provides for medically necessary preventive, primary, acute and chronic health care needs."
