As Catholics who believe the United States should continue to be a nation of immigrants, we support President Obama's executive action on immigration reform.
This is the first step in bringing relief and hope to millions of aspiring Americans and their families who are seeking a home in the United States.
Since the beginning of this debate, the Catholic Church has been a leading advocate for comprehensive immigration reform. As we enter into the holiday season, we remember that Jesus himself was a child immigrant seeking a home and a future in a foreign country.
To our immigrant brother and sisters, our message is clear: the Church stands with you! We believe that Pope Francis is right: "migrants and refugees are not pawns on the chessboard of humanity." And we will not tire of working to create a nation that's more just and less cold. Our nation's history is that of an immigrant people, and starting tonight, we will work to ensure that our future will be as well.
