We call on the candidate for President to reject this immoral practice.

Mr. Bush,

As Catholics who believe in the dignity of every human life, we were deeply disturbed by your comments on Thursday that refused to rule out the practice of torture if you were elected president.

This was a departure from your remarks earlier this year when you said that your brother George W. Bush’s torture program was no longer necessary.

Our Holy Father Pope Francis has called for the universal abolition of torture, which he says is a “very grave sin.”

As your fellow Catholics, we ask you to stand with Pope Francis and his predecessors in denouncing torture as a sin against God and a crime against human society.
